VOICES / SPORTS CAMPAIGN
A VISION OF SPORT FOR ALL

Autumn 2021

Sport thrives at Tiffin Girls’ and the school’s ethos of excellence in sport sits comfortably alongside an approach that promotes participation in physical activity for fun, health and recreation. In line with the #thisgirlcan campaign philosophy, students are encouraged to overcome their barriers to participation, to build self-confidence and a passion for continuing in a health-related activity even after they leave education.

One of our Year 11 students agrees, 'Before joining Tiffin Girls', I must say that I lacked confidence. I never really put myself forward for a position nor for a team; I was an introvert to say the least. However, in Year 7, I stepped out of my comfort zone and joined numerous sports teams. Over the past 5 years, P.E and sports at Tiffin Girls' has made me a confident, bubbly, and extroverted individual. The new sports hall will be amazing as it will provide more opportunities for all students and allow them to step forward and take them just like I did.'

The new Sports Hall and facilities will help increase participation among children and adults, regardless of background, ethnicity, age or ability. It will also support our students and local community by developing their physical, mental, social and moral capacities through regular involvement in PE, sport and physical activity.

'The construction would not only allow sporting enthusiasts like myself to progress and train physically, which I have experienced first-hand translates into a positive mentality in the academic sphere of school life, but it will also encourage all pupils to uptake a new form of exercise, to challenge themselves, build self-motivation and develop a healthy habit which will be continued through to adulthood.' says Ella, a year 12 student.

Nimi, currently in year 8, added, 'Better sports facilities such as this new sports hall will attract new girls to try out new sports, especially because it would be a multi-functional hall, because the fact that it is new will encourage girls to ‘see what it’s about'.

Whilst the school has been able to secure a significant capital investment from the government, this will only cover the infrastructure costs. Therefore the 'Fit for the Future' fundraising campaign has been launched to raise £200,000 to enable the purchase of vital fixtures and fittings required to make it the best facility possible. If you are interested in supporting this wonderful project in any capacity, then please contact development@tiffingirls.org

ARTICLE / SPORTS CAMPAIGN
REALISING A STRONGER, HEALTHIER COMMUNITY

Autumn 2021

By Summer 2022, the ambition is to realise a sports hall that will inspire the next generation of women in sport, promote physical and mental wellbeing and provide high quality and varied sporting provision for the local community. Addressing the inequality of the sporting facilities in the local area is something we passionately believe in and key to this is forging stronger links by supporting the needs of our local community by offering an enhanced range of sporting facilities outside of school hours.

We spoke to several leading coaches and sports directors in the area to find out their views about the positive impact the Sports Hall would have in the area.

Gavin Reynolds, Cricket Participation Officer from The Surrey Cricket Foundation said, 'There are a few local cricket clubs in the area such as Kingstonian CC, Malden Wanderers CC that are looking to develop their girls’ sections, and I believe that by having this extra facility in Kingston, this will enable clubs such as these the chance to grow stronger links with the schools’ cricket programme. This will then provide a pathway to enable more girls to play at either club or representative cricket in the coming years.'

David Rijvers, Director of Richmond Volleyball, concurred, 'The Girls school desperately need a new indoor Sports Hall to encourage and support more girls playing sport and to improve the delivery of the school’s sports curriculum. Richmond Beach Volleyball wants a specialist evening and weekend training venue. The primary aim is to provide an affordable, community based facility that give young people and adults – irrespective of social class, gender, ethnicity or financial circumstances – the opportunity to develop through participation in volleyball and fitness and related activities.'

Gary Burgess, International Netball Umpire, further added, 'The geographical position of the school places it at the heart of the Surrey County Netball ‘scene’. With the recent increased interest in Netball following the Commonwealth Games gold medal win the new facility will provide an opportunity for a top class and much needed venue. These new and redeveloped facilities will not only bring netballers into the school but offer additional sports facilities to the local community.’
